Your router may be working perfectly—but is it secure?

TP-Link and NETGEAR have recently published security advisories affecting a range of home and small-business routers and mesh Wi-Fi systems.

Affected TP-Link equipment includes certain versions of:

• Deco BE11000
• Archer MR600 4G router
• TL-MR6400 4G router

NETGEAR’s advisory covers numerous Nighthawk and Orbi models, including MR/MS mesh systems, RAX routers, RBR760/RBS760 and some newer Wi-Fi 7 models.

The important point is that routers and Wi-Fi access points do not always make it obvious when security updates are available—or when the manufacturer has stopped supporting them entirely.

Three things to check:

  1. Record the exact model and hardware revision.
  2. Check that it is running the latest firmware and enable automatic updates where available.
  3. If the device is end-of-support, consider replacing it rather than relying on a factory reset.

Firmware can be specific to the model, hardware revision and region, so do not install an update simply because the product name looks similar.

Your Wi-Fi can appear to work normally while the equipment protecting your network is outdated.
